Barrington police charged a local woman with violating the Social Host law after she allegedly allowed more than two dozen teenagers to party inside her home last weekend.

Police said Carol Child, 54, of 1 St. Andrew's Way, was aware of the large gathering inside her home on Saturday night, March 24. After police responded to the home for a 911 hangup call, Ms. Child allegedly told the officers that they should give the kids a break, and that they were just "blowing off steam" after the hockey game. (Barrington High School's boys hockey team played in Game 2 of the Division II state championship series on Saturday night.)

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said his department formally charged Ms. Child on Wednesday, March 28, following an investigation. A 17-year-old boy was also charged with underage possession of alcohol during the police department's initial response to the home on Saturday night.

According to police, a 911 hangup call was traced to the home at 1 St. Andrew's Way at about 11 p.m. Officers responded to the scene and found cars parked in the driveway, on the sides of the street and in a nearby preschool's parking lot.

When officers went around the back of the home they found teenagers exiting through the cellar bulkhead and fleeing the area on foot. When officers went into the basement, they could allegedly smell the strong odor of marijuana and alcohol.

Chief LaCross said his officers found beer, hard alcohol, marijuana smoking bowls, a beer funnel and a game of beer pong set up on a table.

Officers later found teenagers trying to flee the house through the garage. Police stopped them.

Eventually, police located the homeowner, Ms. Child, inside the kitchen. She allegedly asked police officers why they were at her home and how they got inside.

Police said the homeowner told officers she was not aware of what the teenagers were doing inside the home.

Chief LaCross said Ms. Child will appear in municipal court on April 19.
