Police: Portsmouth man threw things after woman took keys

PORTSMOUTH — A local man was charged with domestic disorderly conduct and domestic vandalism after he allegedly threw things around his home following an argument.

According to police, a 43-year-old local woman complained that Michael E. Bettencourt Jr., 45, of 451 Park Ave., had been drinking that day, so she took his car keys to prevent him from driving.

An angry Mr. Bettencourt then threw around and destroyed some items in the kitchen and living room area, she told police.

Mr. Bettencourt was also cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Here are some more highlights from the Portsmouth Police report from over the past week:

Tuesday, June 20

Timothy J. Svendsen, 29, of 194 Mulberry St., Apt. 1W, Fall RIver, was charged around 9 a.m. with driving while intoxicated. Police pulled his heavily damaged car over on West Main Road near Turkey Hill after police received a report of an erratic driver. A witness told police the car had struck a pole earlier but kept going.

Shawn M. McLaughlin, 50, of 1770 Pleasant St., Apt. 3, Fall River, was charged shortly before midnight on two bench warrants from 2nd and 6th district courts. Mr. McLaughlin was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over on West Main Road for leaving the lane of travel, police said.

Wednesday, June 21

Bethany C. Cottrell, 38, of 33 Stubtoe Lane, was charged shortly before 9 a.m. with domestic assault. A 37-year-old local man reported that Ms. Cottrell had assaulted him multiple times in the past, according to police.

Jose M. Soares, 20, of 200 Magill St., Third Floor, Pawtucket, was charged on a 6th District Court bench warrant at 1:10 p.m. Mr. Soares was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for speeding on West Main Road near King Charles Drive, police said.

Friday, June 23

John P. Binette, 48, of 82 Mason Ave., was charged at about 8:30 p.m. with driving while intoxicated, his second offense. Police responded to a report by Tiverton Police of an erratic driver on Route 24 South. Police later spotted the vehicle as it pulled into Stone Bridge Marina. During a search of the vehicle, police said they found two opened bottles of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky — one empty and the other about two-thirds empty, according to police. Mr. Binette was also charged with refusing a preliminary breath test.

Saturday, June 24

William R. Dalessio, 44, of 475 Middle Highway, Barrington, was charged with driving while intoxicated at about 10:50 p.m. According to police, Mr. Dalessio’s vehicle was stopped on East Main Road near the police station because it left the lane of travel and nearly struck a curb. The vehicle also had a broken brake light, police said. Mr. Dalessio was also cited for refusing a chemical test. While at the police station, Mr. Dalessio complained of chest pains and the Fire Department transported him to Newport Hospital, police said. He was treated and released the following morning around 8:30 a.m., according to police.

Timothy L. Haslam, 58, of 2 North Drive, was charged with resisting arrest after police went to his home around 5 p.m. to serve a 2nd District Court warrant, police said. According to police, two officers took Mr. Haslam to the floor before handcuffing him.
