A Barrington police officer on patrol stopped a vehicle that was traveling on the Wampanoag Trail at about 9:10 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7. The officer said the vehicle was not using its directionals.
Upon approaching the driver's side window, the officer could allegedly smell the odor of marijuana.
The officer asked the driver, a 22-year-old Brooklyn, NY resident, why he was in Barrington. The man said he was in town to pick up two friends, but when the officer asked what their addresses were, the man was unable to answer.
The officer then noticed Target bags containing new video game consoles inside the vehicle and asked the driver to show the receipts. The driver could not provide the receipts.
Police said the driver and the two passengers — ages 18 and 19 — were acting suspiciously, so they called in a K-9 unit to search the vehicle for contraband. The search proved negative, said police.
Officers said they could not arrest the driver because they had no proof the items inside the vehicle had been stolen.
