Second search process yields larger group of candidates

More than a dozen people applied for the vacant Barrington High School principal’s position, during the second search process.

During a recent interview, Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore said at least 15 people applied for the job. The district is currently conducting its second search for the next BHS principal; Barrington had identified two finalists during the prior search, but both candidates withdrew their names late in the process.

Messore said the school district has a search committee that is working with a consultant, NESDEC (New England School Development Council), to identify candidates for the job. The search committee includes parents of students, educators, members of school PTOs and improvement teams, and is led by Barrington Middle School Principal Andy Anderson.

The application deadline for the current search was July 6. Members of the search committee met on July 7 and 8 to review the applicants’ paperwork and conducted interviews on July 12.

Eight individuals applied for the position during the first search process. Messore said that timing may have played a factor in the increased number of applicants. The first time the opening was posted schools were still in session.

“Maybe with the school year ending, it made a difference,” Messore said.

The superintendent said he is confident the district will find a new Barrington High School principal soon, and he’s eager to allow that individual to spend some time transitioning into the new position while longtime BHS Principal Joe Hurley is still in the building.

“That’s really the key, is having someone there with the transition,” Messore said, adding that Hurley will continue to work throughout the summer months.

“Joe’s working his tail off this summer,” Messore said. “He’s dedicated to his job. Joe will work there until the last day.”

It has been a long time since Barrington conducted a search for its high school principal. Over the last 40 years, Barrington High School has had two principals: Hurley and his predecessor, the late John Gray.
