Sevetson — Schools need to communicate with the community

Posted

The fourth pillar of the Barrington Schools Strategic Plan is “Parent and Community Engagement.” An integral piece of this goal should be effective communication—with parents, students, teachers, and the public. We’ve seen how vital communication was in engaging the community to pass the BMS bond, but at the same time, many taxpayers have legitimate concerns about the district’s annual budget—concerns that could be alleviated with upfront education about fiscal structure, policy, and procedures. Many parents rely on unofficial Facebook pages to share news and information about school programs and activities; these pages have their place in building community, but they can also be sources for rumors and bad information, and should not take the place of official school/district communication.

Our top priority must be the education of our students. But the entire community has a stake in this priority, and a comprehensive communications strategy will be key in engaging all of Barrington.
