Warning to Barrington businesses: Letter is a scam

Police tell shop owners to discard fake fund-raising letter

Barrington Police are warning local business owners and residents about an alleged scam.

Officials said a letter has been received by local folks that solicits money for a "Barrington High School 2019 Spring Sports Poster."

The letter, said police detectives, is a scam.

"It has come to the attention of Barrington High School that a scam fund-raiser letter is being sent to local businesses on behalf of the school," wrote police in an email. "This is a scam and we encourage residents and or businesses to simply discard the letter."

The letter offers businesses an advertisement in the alleged sports poster in exchange for $189. It includes a space for the business's credit card information or instructs the individual to send a check — made payable to "Sports Media" to an address in Memphis, Tenn.

Anyone with questions about the scam should call the Barrington Police Department at 437-3930.
