Write-in candidate emerges in council race

Former recreation department leader John Taylor enters race

Posted

Former Barrington Recreation Department Director John Taylor is running as a write-in candidate in the upcoming town council special election.

Mr. Taylor — and any other write-in candidates — will face Democrat Joy Hearn, who is also running for the open seat. The special election is set for Tuesday, Feb. 5.

Mr. Taylor sent an email to the Times this weekend, stating that his main goal in running for the open council seat was to change the way the town conducts its financial town meetings. Mr. Taylor said he wants to see the town conduct an open, all-day process "by ballot or voting machine," rather than conducting a meeting that "runs late into the night."

"This would provide all voters the opportunity to cast their vote," he wrote.

Mr. Taylor said he is facing an uphill battle in the council race, but believes the FTM issue is very important.

"Lots of seniors are afraid that they will be taxed out of their homes," wrote Mr. Taylor.

Mr. Taylor has lived in Barrington for 50 years.
