Mt. Hope names February’s students of the month

Engineering, robotics students go beyond their own work to help peers excel

Posted

Highlighting their leadership, ability and willingness to help their peers and others, Mt. Hope High School on Monday named its students of the month for February.

Sabrina Loureiro, a junior, not only excels at her own work — particularly in the robotics and engineering program — but also ensures her classmates and teammates with the Robotics Club understand the engineering process necessary to succeed in the technological field, according to STEM teacher Ryan Garrity, who nominated her for the award.

“This is for everything you do, going above and beyond in the classroom,” Mr. Garrity told Sabrina during a ceremony at the school Monday, noting her work with middle school students in teaching them how to document the engineering process. “Always striving to improve, Sabrina has shown great intellectual curiosity by taking it upon herself to meet with local engineers on how to improve the engineering process and properly document ideas as a true engineer would.”

Sabrina, of Bristol, a member of the Robotics Club, has also played on the school’s lacrosse team, ran cross country and served as treasurer of her freshman class. The daughter of Joe and Ines Loureiro, hopes to continue her work with robotics beyond high school, ultimately becoming a mechanical engineer.

Mark Orban, a sophomore, is a fellow student of the technology and engineering program at Mt. Hope, a motivated, intelligent student, especially when it comes to machining parts and programming robots, according to technology education teacher Joseph Bartoshevich. He also is more than willing to share his knowledge with his peers, routinely helping classmates and teammates with engineering quandaries.

“Students who have run into a problem will ask Mark for guidance to resolve the problem. They know Mark has encountered this same problem and has solved it,” Mr. Bartoshevich said. “The students listen to Mark because they know they can trust him to give them an honest answer. The students respect Mark and know he is a very responsible, honest and hard-working student.”

Mark, of Bristol, the son of Cassandra Costantino, is on the Robotics Club and the Math Team, and he runs cross-country. After graduating, he hopes to pursue a career in engineering.

The students of the month are named each month at Mt. Hope. In addition to a certificate commemorating the award, each student receives a check for $75, donated by the Bristol Elks.
