Alfred L. Hawkes, 90, Audubon's longtime leader

Alfred L. Hawkes, 90, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Marie (Zampini) Hawkes, whom he married on Sept. 5, 1950.

He was the son of the late Irving and Dorothy (Blake) Hawkes. In addition to his wife, he leaves his three children, Dori Robinson (John), Catherine Hawkes, and Tony Hawkes (Maryann), four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hawkes served as executive director of the Rhode Island Audubon Society for 35 years. During his tenure, he was instrumental in passing significant environmental legislation in the state of Rhode Island. He was recognized both locally and nationally as a leader in the environmental movement.

Mr. Hawkes received numerous honors and awards, including honorary doctorates from Brown University, Rhode Island College, and the University of Rhode Island.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 19, 2018, at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Danielson Pike, North Scituate. Burial will be private. Visitation respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, 12 Sanderson Rd., Smithfield, RI, 02917.
