Ms. Ann J. (Burke) Travers, age 78, of Bristol, died Monday, June 18, 2018, at R.I. Hospital surrounded by her loving family.  Born in Fall River, Mass., and a lifelong Bristol resident, she was the daughter of the late John L. “Todd” and Anna R. “Nancy” (Vatalaro) Burke.

Ann’s most cherished moments were spent with her children, granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. She loved hosting gatherings and holidays, especially the Fourth of July, which became a memorable tradition for all family and friends.  Selfless is a word many use to describe Ann, always generous and giving, putting others before herself.

Ann was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1957 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from R.I. College in 1972.  She was a teacher for the Bristol School Department for 28 years, retiring in 2000 as a second-grade teacher at Byfield School.

Following her retirement, she owned and operated The Art of Learning Store in Warren, and recently was a companion for Home Health Care. She was a proud, dedicated parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Bristol.

Ann leaves two children, Joseph P. Travers of East Providence and Karyn Travers-Harper of Bristol; her granddaughter, Sophia Ann Harper, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was the sister of the late John L. Burke, Jr. and Joan B. Ferri.

Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are Saturday, June 23, at 9 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.

Visiting hours will be Friday, June 22, 2018, from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol, RI 02809, or to the American Lung Association in Rhode Island, 260 W. Exchange Street, Providence, RI 02903 or online at www.lung.org  For online condolence, shared memories, information and directions go to www.sansonefuneralhome.com.
