Bristol Police: Homicide, DUI, underage drinking, and more

The Bristol Police Department responded to the following calls between March 27 and April 2:

Monday, March 27

Bristol Police assisted with a fire at Sawa Asian Bistro on Wood Street just after 2 p.m. In addition to Bristol Police and Fire, personnel from National Grid, the state Department of Health, and the Bristol County Water Authority responded.

Officers responded to calls for suspicious activity on Courageous Circle and State Street. Both were unfounded.

Tuesday, March 28

A resident on Kingwood Road reported an Internet scam. Police filed a report.

A resident on Christopher Drive called police around 1 p.m. because a car was parked in front of the house. The car was legally parked and the occupants were nurses assisting the caller’s neighbor.

Officers responded to reports of a family disturbance on Wood Street that turned out to be a verbal argument.

A resident found and turned in keys to a GMC truck found on the ground near the driver’s side door on Wood Street just before 6 p.m. The keys were returned to their owner.

Wednesday, March 29

Police received a call reporting eight people crammed into a five-passenger car and drove away from Mt. Hope High School just after 3 p.m. The blue and gray sedan was last seen on Sherry Avenue, but police did not find it.

Thursday, March 30

Police responded to a fire at a home on Fernwood Road just after midnight. The fire was quickly knocked down, but two victims were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Animal Control responded to several animal complaints, including two loose dogs on Ferry Road and another on Riverview Avenue Thursday morning, and roadkill on Mulberry Road at noon. Also, a goose was hit by a car on Metacom Avenue around 5:30 p.m. The state Department of Environmental Management was advised.

Friday, March 31

A resident complained of loud music coming from a home on Bay View Avenue at 12:20 a.m. The resident was working on a car in the back of the house and was advised to turn the music down.

Reports of another domestic disturbance, this time on Roma Street at 7 a.m., again turned out to be verbal only.

The Stop & Shop on Metacom Avenue was briefly evacuated after a minor electrical fire at 8:30 a.m. An employee put out the fire in an electrical outlet with an extinguisher and business soon resumed.

A car on Alma Street was reportedly blasting the music at 9 p.m., prompting a call to police. The car soon left the area.
Another noise complaint, this one on Wood Street at 11:45 p.m. was unfounded.

Saturday, April 1

Officers responded to several nuisance and suspicious activity complaints through the night, including on Narrows Point at 12:30 a.m., at Independence Park at 12:45 a.m., and on Bay View Avenue at 2 a.m. None required police action, and no arrests were made.

A wire was sparking on an electric pole at Metacom Avenue and Franklin Street, according to a caller, who actually “mistook the street light for sparks.”

A car was reportedly stolen on DeWolf Avenue. Police are investigating.

Police removed a resident from a home on Sowams Drive after reports of a disturbance inside a home. There was no arrest made.

Junyi Shen, 20, of 16 Tavern Circle, Sudbury, Mass., was charged with unlawful drinking - ID card misuse at a liquor store on Metacom Avenue around 7:30 p.m.

Michael Connor Shea, 20, of 33 Longview Road, Trumbull, Conn., was charged with underage possession of alcohol at a liquor store on Hope Street around 8:30 p.m.

Sunday, April 2

Police removed an unwanted man from a home on Wayland Road at midnight. No charges were filed.

Police assisted Roger Williams University security with a suspicious situation at the Almeida Apartments off Bay View Avenue around 5 a.m. Security officers encountered a motorcycle laying on its side in the parking lot of the university dorms there. The owner reportedly no longer lives in the apartments and officers were unable to make contact.

Loose chickens were reportedly running around Tilbury Drive at 9 a.m.

Warren Police reported a gray Honda was driving recklessly, weaving in and out of traffic on Metacom Avenue. The car crossed into Bristol, but was gone when Bristol officers arrived.

A person was reportedly rollerblading in the road at MT. Hope Avenue and Third Street, impeding traffic. Police advised the skater to keep out of traffic.

Selena Prescilla Martinez, 21, of 17 South Road, Exeter, was charged with first degree murder. State Police arrested Ms. Martinez in Exeter and brought her to Bristol to face charges of allegedly killing her boyfriend’s grandmother, Eudora Gustafson, at the home they all shared on Sowams Drive. See page 1 for more details of the crime.

A car was reportedly speeding through Colt State Park. Police contact the DEM, which polices the park, but no state officers were available. Bristol Police caught up with the car in a parking lot along Asylum Road, advising the driver to slow it down.

Joseph E. Medeiros, 59, of 774 Metacom Ave., Bristol, was charged with driving under the influence on Roma Street at 3:30 p.m.

A resident on Hope Street reported suspicious activity at a neighbor’s home. A man was reportedly walking around the property with a flashlight around 9 p.m. The man is a new resident to the area and was walking in his own yard.
