Annual 4 Bridges Ride held Sunday

EAST BAY — Bicyclists enjoyed some of the most spectacular views in our area Sunday when they crossed over four bridges before ending their 26-mile ride in Bristol.

The sixth annual 4 Bridges Ride, sponsored by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA), started in North Kingstown Sunday morning and took cyclists across the Jamestown, Newport, Sakonnet and Mt. Hope bridges.

Motorists experienced slight delays and used a few traffic detours to accommodate the cyclists, with police blocking off some roads as early as 4:30 a.m.

From a park-and-ride in North Kingstown, cyclists traveled to Route 138, across the 1.4-mile-long Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge and through the toll plaza via the connector road.

After crossing the Newport Pell Bridge, riders used the JT Connell highway ramp and continued onto Connell Highway in Newport before connecting with Lexington Street and Chases Lane in Middletown.

The cyclists then traveled up Burma Road — which was closed to motorists last week for about a month for paving — to Stringham Road onto West Main Road in Portsmouth, onto the Hummocks Avenue exit toward the Sakonnet River Bridge.

Once over the bridge, riders turned around in Tiverton and crossed back into Portsmouth and headed toward the Mt. Hope Bridge on Anthony Road and Boyd's Lane. After riding into Bristol, riders finished outside Roger Williams University.

All net proceeds from rider registration and sponsorships from the event will be donated to Save The Bay, according to RITBA.
