Democrat June Speakman wins District 68 election

Democrat June Speakman has won the House District 68 special election to fill the seat vacated by Laufton Ascencao.

The unofficial count shows Ms. Speakman capturing 40 percent of the votes cast in Bristol and Warren, with Libertarian William Hunt capturing 29 percent, Independent Ken Marshall, the incumbent, capturing 23 percent, and Independent James McCanna III capturing 8 percent.

There were 1,997 votes cast. Results were:

  • Speakman: 789
  • Hunt: 573
  • Marshall: 468
  • McCanna III: 167

Moments after the results were posted, Ms. Speakman released a prepared statement:

“I want to thank the voters of Bristol and Warren for believing in our campaign and for choosing me to be your new State Representative. I also want to thank all the volunteers who gave so much of their time to talk with voters about our values and our vision for this district and for Rhode Island.
 
"We began this campaign knowing that the values that Bristol and Warren voters care about need to be upheld. We deserve a government that is transparent and accountable to the people it serves. We know that we need to do more to address climate change and preserve the shoreline and waterways that make our communities special. We believe that all working families deserve to live in a safe and affordable home. We must prioritize our children's futures by fighting for more funding for our schools. We want to ensure that our senior citizens are able to age in place with dignity. And we want to protect women’s reproductive rights -- no matter what happens at the federal level.
 
“The voters have spoken and have shown that every voice and every vote matter. I will work hard to make a difference and am eager to get to work for our community.”

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
