The East Bay Co-op girls ice hockey team took a commanding 6-0 lead in the first period and glided to an 8-5 win over the Smithfield/Coventry/Rogers Co-op team on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

Sarah Yee opened the scoring for East Bay with a goal at the 2:46 mark of the first period, while Marissa Levreault notched the assist. About a minute later, Maeve Harrington made it 2-0 for the Eagles. Yee scored her second of four goals at the 6:20 mark of the opening period. 

East Bay's Taylor DeFreitas gave her team a 5-0 lead with two straight goals, and Maddie Cornell increased the Eagles' lead to 6-0 with a goal at the 10:40 mark in the period.

The Smithfield/Coventry/Rogers Co-op team scored the next four goals, but Yee closed the door on the opposition with two more goals in the third period.

Zoey Despines made 16 saves for the Eagles.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
