Eagles skate past Mounties in Medeiros Cup opener

East Bay girls co-op team wins 6-0

Posted

The East Bay Girls Co-op ice hockey team scored two goals in the first two minutes and rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Mount St. Charles/Cumberland/Lincoln Co-op team in the first of the two Medeiros Cup games on Wednesday night, Jan. 2.

Ella Hanley opened the scoring for the Eagles. The junior buried a wrist shot from the point just 29 seconds after the opening face-off.

About a minute and a half later, East Bay's Maddie Cox scored the first of her four goals on the night. Barrington High School freshman Rose Flaherty had the assist.

Cox made it 3-0 for East Bay with another goal at the 3:51 mark in the first period. Katherine Barker and Maeve Harrington assisted on the goal.

Barker scored the Eagles' fourth goal of the period at 14:57 off an assist from Cox.

"We jumped on them early. We were up 2-0 after two minutes. Then one of their top players took a bad penalty," said East Bay coach Michael Cox.

Building an early 4-0 lead allowed Coach Cox the opportunity to get some of his team's less experienced players crucial ice time.

"You're in a great situation when you can do that," he said. "We want to play to win, but you also want everybody to play."

East Bay extended its lead to 5-0 when Cox scored her third goal of the game in the third period, and the local co-op team went up 6-0 when Cox netted her fourth goal in the final period. Flaherty assisted on both goals.

Ellee Kopecky made 18 saves in net for the Eagles.

Coach Cox said he named Marissa Levreault, a sophomore from Portsmouth High School, and Maeve Harrington, a junior from Barrington, co-players of the game.

Coach Cox said Marissa played hard throughout the game and added that Harrington is one of the most coachable members of the team.

Coach Cox took time to credit JP Medeiros for organizing the annual Medeiros Cup memorial games — the hockey games are named for Mr. Medeiros's son, who was killed in an auto accident years ago. Money raised through the game supports scholarships given to members of the East Bay Girls' Co-op, Barrington boys and Mt. Hope boys hockey teams.

The East Bay Girls Co-op team, which improved to 5-0 in the league, will return to the ice on Friday night for a game at Burrillville.
