Finish for a Guinness this Sunday

Race has become a giant party, all in the name of ALS research

Hundreds of runners will hit the streets in Warren Sunday morning, but that’s just the beginning of the fun — a huge party follows.

The annual Finish For a Guinness, started by a local family to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research, has become one of the biggest athletic and social summer events in Warren since it was started by sisters Tara Thibaudeau, Erin Kopecky, Amy Stone, Holly DaSilveira and Shannon Cisneros to honor their loved one Christopher Stone, who died from the disease.

While the 5K’s title hints that there’s a free beer waiting for runners at the end of the race, the event has become much more — an hours-long party on the grounds of the Old Warren Marina at 66 Church St. Local restaurants including The Square Peg, Revival, Blount and others participate, serving free food to the runners after they make their way through the race course. Now firmly established, the race draws upwards of 700 runners per year, some of whom run in teams or sport hilarious outfits.

Runners start on Water Street just opposite the Wharf Tavern, make their way south to Bridge Street, turn east and then south on Main. They follow Main until they hit Seymour Street, turn east and then north on Barden Lane. Once they reach Vernon they head west and then south on Main, west on Campbell and north on Water, before they Guinness … make that finish … the run.

This year’s race is Sunday, Sept. 3. It starts at 10 a.m. and utilizes chip timing. The entry fee is $30 prior to August 31 and $35 on race day. For children under the age of 12, registration is $15. All pre-registered participants receive a long-sleeve T-shirt. For those who would rather pick up their numbers prior to Sunday morning, number pick-up is available Saturday, Sept. 2, from 12 to 3 p.m. Numbers can also be picked up on race day.

Race organizers ask that those not running seek alternative travel routes between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday. The race will close down parts of Water Street and Main Street during the height of the run. Organizers suggest using Metacom Avenue and Franklin Street to get into town.
