Bristol firefighters were on the scene of a structure fire on Church Street Wednesday afternoon, battling bitter cold to fight the smoky fire called in at about 2:45 p.m.

The fire appeared to have started on the first floor of the grey two-story tenement at 74 Church St. owned by Nunes Property Management, according to town tax assessment records. Fire fighters reported having the fire mostly under control by 3:05 p.m.

A neighbor across the street said he first noticed the fire after smelling what he thought was a campfire. He looked across the street and the smoke was pouring out of the home’s west side, on the first floor. The fire drew several dozen fire fighters to the home, just west of the fire department’s Dreadnaught station. Bristol fire officials called in the state Fire Marshal just before 3 p.m.
