Mrs. Florence (Goulet) Mendes, 97, of Verdi Lane, Bristol, died peacefully Friday, May 19, 2017 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Manuel Mendes, Jr., who preceded her in death on May 31, 1985.

Born and raised in Woonsocket, she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Elizabeth (Tremblay) Goulet. A resident of Bristol for 47 years, she previously resided in Warren. Florence was a floor supervisor for the American Tourister Company, formerly in Warren, for 15 years, retiring in the early 1970s. She previously worked for the former Taylor Box Co. and Crown Fastener Co.

A communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, she was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society. An avid reader, she loved to shoe shop and spend time crocheting, but her favorite was spending time with her family — her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandson.

She is survived by two children, Robert F. Mendes of Warren, and Muriel F. Mello of Bristol; two grandchildren, Raymond Castigliego Jr. of Pascoag, and Lisa Castigliego Mota (David) of Bristol; great grandchildren Alyssa Brown (Richard), Rachelle and Joshua Castigliego, Tayla Florenzano, and Matthew, Zachary and Tiffany Mota; great-great grandson Bryce Brown; and a sister, Delores Arsenault (Frank) of Cumberland. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by siblings Lillian Beauregard, Oliver D. Goulet and Irene Dempsey.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of her grandson, Raymond, to the American Stroke Association, RI Chapter, 1 State St., Suite 200, Providence, RI, 02908, or online at www.strokeassociation.org.
