PROVIDENCE — For the first time in 33 years, the LaSalle Academy baseball team won the state championship, sweeping South Kingstown in two games to claim the title at McCoy Stadium in June.
The Catholic school, of course, consists of students from across the state and around the area, and its' baseball team had a significant and integral East Bay influence.
Third-year head coach Mark Mercurio is a resident of the Rumford section of East Providence while a handful of the Rams' key contributors this spring hailed from Warren, Bristol and E.P. as well as neighboring Seekonk.
During a break overseeing a camp on the school grounds this week, Mercurio reflected on his interesting rise through the coaching ranks.
His story, and that of the Rams from the East Bay, will soon appear at eastbayri.com and the various print editions of East Bay Newspapers.
