George W. Leffingwell Jr., 87, of Bristol, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Monday, Nov. 5, 2018. He was the husband of Kathleen (Belmore) Leffingwell, his wife of 65 years.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late George W. and Jeannie (Barr) Leffingwell Sr. and brother of Louise (Leffingwell) Staples of Dighton.

George was a graduate of Barrington High School, Class of 1949, and worked as a merchant marine until the receipt of his draft notice to serve in the Korean War. George served with the 2nd infantry division 9th infantry regiment on the front lines between Pork Chop Hill, Old Baldy and the Kumwha Valley.

He was severely wounded through his valiant efforts in battle, where he earned the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, The Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and the United Nations Service Medal for Korea.

George was an avid car enthusiast, owning and operating a modified race car, number 58, on the East Coast circuit through the 1950s and ’60s, notably Seekonk Speedway, winning numerous trophies.

He was the founder and proprietor of Leffingwell’s Garage, opening its doors in 1971, a respected automobile repair facility of Bristol for over 47 years until his retirement.

Mr. Leffingwell’s lifetime affiliations included the Elks Lodge #1860 of Bristol, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and West Barrington Men’s Club, and he was an avid golfer, member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club.

George is survived by his children, Roy Leffingwell (Jacqueline Silvia), Debra Leffingwell (James P. Barnaby), and Eric Leffingwell (Jodi Botelho Leffingwell); grandchildren, Bryan Leffingwell (Melissa), Paul Breault (Amy Gonzalez), Shana Leffingwell Giarrusso (Steven), Abigale Leffingwell, and Aubrey Leffingwell; and great-granddaughter, Quinley Harper Giarrusso. George was preceded in death by his precious grandson and kindred spirit, Daniel C.Breault.

George enjoyed his time spent at home and daily interactions with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-granddaughter and his beloved cat, Punky, and dogs, Inca and Iris.

There will be no services. George will be laid to rest at Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington, R.I., at a later date.
