St. Patrick's Day dinner raises funds for veterans' picnic, greenhouse

Posted

Everyone was Irish for a day this past Sunday, when the Warren’s American Legion Auxiliary Unit 11 held its annual corned beef and cabbage dinner at St. Thomas The Apostle Church on Metacom Avenue.

Between eat-in diners and take out orders, auxiliary volunteers prepared 207 meals in what is the organization’s only fund-raiser of the year.

“We have no overhead and we’re all volunteers,” the auxiliary’s Judy Fardig said. “Every penny we raise goes back into the community.”

Specifically, proceeds will be used to support the auxiliary’s annual cookout at the Bristol Town Beach, held for residents of the Rhode Island Veterans’ Home in Bristol. Funds will also be used to build a greenhouse at the veterans’ home.

The dinner was a well-oiled machine. Servers kept the dinners flowing while kitchen help came in and out with fresh corned beef, potatoes, carrots, corned beef and desserts. The church hall’s green walls fit well with guests’ attire, and a good percentage of the diners wore green in honor of the day. One man’s shirt read “0% Irish,” but he was fed anyway.
