Walk-out is in response to Florida school shooting

Kickemuit Middle School principal Christine Homen sent this letter to parents of middle school students this week. Many middle and high schools around the area will also participate in the nationwide walkout:

Dear KMS Families,
Many students are participating in the National School Walkout on Wednesday, March 14th. The walkout lasts from 10:00 am until 10:17 am to honor the 17 lives taken in the Parkland, Florida School shooting. The goal of the students is to give the voiceless a voice and to inspire change through civil disobedience.
We have several teachers and staff who will assist our students in creating and conducting a respectful and meaningful experience for everyone involved. Our first priority is to ensure the safety of your children, the Warren Police Department has been informed and will be at school during this event. Students will be under constant supervision during the walkout. It will be structured and students will be well aware of the designated route and walkout location beforehand.
The walkout itself is optional. We understand this is a sensitive issue. We respect the decisions of teachers and students either way. Students who do not wish to participate will be supervised by a teacher in a classroom while the walkout takes place. If your child plans on participating, please communicate the seriousness of this walkout to them. This is not an opportunity for them to simply get out of class, but an opportunity for them to support and stand behind the students and faculty of Stoneman Douglas High School as well as raise awareness about school safety.
We will continue to stress the expectations to our students who participate. Students should wear their school colors on March 14th to promote school spirit and unity. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns.
