Letter: Learn about Lyme Disease this Monday night

Posted

As warm weather envelops the region, we must once again be wary of ticks infected with Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases. Lyme Disease symptoms can present themselves just days after a tick bite, but it can also be several months before they appear, making Lyme Disease challenging to diagnose.

While the type and severity of symptoms vary, some common ones are tiredness, body/muscle aches, joint pain, fever, rash, stiff neck and facial paralysis.
May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and we all have an opportunity to learn more about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tick-borne infections at a special program being held this Monday evening, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Rogers Free Library. The presenter is Timothy Flanigan, MD, one of the preeminent Lyme Disease experts in Rhode Island.

I encourage everyone to educate themselves about this devastating disease by attending this free presentation.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
