Mt. Hope gymnasts win first meet of the season

The Mt. Hope High School gymnastics team beat Portsmouth in the first meet of the season at the Newport YMCA on Saturday. The reigning D-II champs are competing for their third championship in a row.

The Lady Huskies combined for 131.90 points for the win, while Portsmouth scored 121.20 for second place and Prout scored 100.5 to take third.

Junior Meghan Oliver led the Huskies with an all-around score of 36.6. She scored a 9.35 on the vault, an 8.55 on the bars, a 9.35 on beam and a 9.35 on floor.

Meghan had the highest score in all-around and in every event for the meet. She also runs track and is doing very well. She has the ability to excel at both sports. The way she balances school and athletics is extraordinary,” said coach Nicole Daniello.

“Juniors Kaitlin Quinn and Jayme Foreman have also improved from last season. They have both added more advanced skills to their routines with beautiful execution,” she said.

Quinn had an all-around score of 33.95, with an 8.5 on vault, 7.7 on bars, 8.35 on beam and an 8.9 on floor.

Foreman sprained her ankle and was only able to compete on bars during Saturday’s meet, scoring a 7.55. “Jaime added a new full-twisting layout flyaway to her routine. Due to her diligence with rehab and incredible motivation while training, she was able to come back a lot faster than I expected,” said the coach.

“Senior captains Brianna Gendreau and Ashley Heald have been good leaders on our team. They both contributed to our team score on Saturday. Ashley is coming back from an ankle injury but gave a fantastic effort during the meet,” said the coach.

Heald scored a 7.7 on beam and a 7.05 on bars and Gendreau scored an 8.0 on vault.

More results:

Junior Kaira Lawrence scored an 8.2 on vault, a 7.0 on bars and a 7.1 on beam. Junior  Junior Olivia Federico scored a 7.8 on vault and a 7.45 on floor. Grace Silva scored a 5.0 on bars, 7.2 on beam and a 7.4 on floor. Samantha Denson scored a 7.6 on vault and a 6.9 on floor. Emilie Donato scored a 6.2 on beam and sister Katie scored a 5.54 on floor.
