Nicholas Allan Kearney, 49, passed away at his residence in Stowe, Vt., on Thursday, June 1, 2017.

Nick was born on July 3, 1967, in Hempstead, N.Y., to Pierce and Grail Kearney. Immediately after his birth, the family moved into their new home, Moongate, in Washington, Conn. Nick attended Washington Primary School, Rumsey Hall School, and Portsmouth Abbey.  He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish language.  He had become fluent in Spanish during his year of study at the Universidad de Sevilla. Nick participated in the Fietas de San Fermi, or "the running of the bulls." He loved the beauty and gusto of Spanish life.

Upon his graduation from college, Nick studied hospitality at the International College of Hospitality in Connecticut. He worked and lived in the most beautiful places — the Buccaneer Hotel in St. Croix, the Caribou Club in Aspen, the Mayflower Inn in Washington, Conn., and Nantucket Island.

Most recently he worked at the Stowe Mountain Club in Stowe. He loved his work as he was a consummate "people" person and always was quick to make people laugh and feel relaxed. His love of nature sparked his photography. He loved fishing and hockey with his brothers and many friends. He ran the Boston Marathon twice.

Nick married Susan O' Donnell 10 years ago, and they lived in Bristol. As a follow up to managing the “Madaket Market,” Nick and Susan opened their store, "Striper Moon," a hip clothing store in Bristol. Of course their greatest collaboration was Summer Beatrice, who was born in 2010.

Nicholas is survived by Susan and Summer, and two brothers, Alex and Pierce, and four sisters, Susanna, Ann, Grail and Mara. In addition, he had many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. Really, the whole world was Nicholas' family, and he leaves so many bereft. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Meg.

There will be a memorial service in the chapel of Portsmouth Abbey, Portsmouth, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 23, with a reception to follow. His ashes will be interred at St. Francis Cemetery in New Milford, Conn., by his parents and sister.
