The long quest to establish a new statewide license plate paying tribute to the Fourth of July and Bristol’s oldest-in-the-country celebration of has succeeded, and the new patriotic license plates are on the way.
The Bristol Fourth of July Committee secured more than 1,400 order forms for the new patriotic plates, exceeding the 900 order minimum for the state Department of Motor Vehicles to issue the new plate. The DMV is sending the plates to Bristol to be distributed in the next couple weeks.
The pick-up day is Saturday, April 8, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., at Mt. Hope High School on Chestnut Street in Bristol. More than 1,400 plates will be distributed that day. To make the hand-out easier and more efficient, the committee has separated the plates alphabetically by last name and scheduled specific times for them to be picked up. The assigned pick-up times include:
Anyone who can not make their assigned time can still pick up their plate any time on April 8, but the committee asks recipients to adhere as closely as possible to the schedule. After April 8, all the remaining plates will be sent to the DMV in Cranston, where they can be picked up.
To collect your license plate, you will need to bring your registration certificate and your old plates to hand in. New registration stickers will be included with the plate. The committee is also asking all recipients to bring a non-perishable food item to be delivered to the local food bank.
The Fourth of July Committee continues to sell the patriotic license plates indefinitely. There is no license plate surcharge included in the new plates, and drivers can keep their current RI license plate number. The cost is a one-time fee of $41.50 — $21.50 to the DMV, $15 to the committee, and $5 to the Rhode Island Veterans Home.
License plate order forms are available all over town, including the Phoenix office at 1 Bradford St. For more information, contact Judy Squires at jsquires14@aol.com or Wayne Picard at wayne.picard@blinkcreative.com.
