Speakman thanks supporters, says she 'took the high road' in campaign

Posted

June Speakman took time to thank the many members of her team who helped win the House District 68 special election on Tuesday, many of whom were gathered at the 195 Franklin restaurant in Bristol. Speaking moments after she learned of her victory, she told the crowd, “We did it! Thank you so much. It was a team effort. I had a wonderful team.”

Later, she addressed the tenor of the shortened two-month campaign, where two of her opponents, Ken Marshall and William Hunt, had  spent a lot of time attacking Ms. Speakman's positions, including a recent push to position her as a supporter of late-term abortions, her sources of campaign funding, and her connections to the former District 68 winner, Laufton Ascencao, who resigned in disgrace.

"I am proud to say that we went high, no matter what the other candidates did," Ms. Speakman said. "As much as I wanted to respond to some of the attacks, I knew, because [campaign manager] Erich [Haselhurst] told me, that I just needed to hold on and stay talking about the issues that are important to us, and ignore all the stuff that was being thrown at us. And although it was really, really tempting, I’m glad we took the high road."

The incumbent in the race, Ken Marshall, spent the evening at The Hometown Tavern in Warren, where he hosted a party featuring Steve Smith and the Nakeds.

“One door closes, another one opens," Mr. Marshall said. "Certainly, we fought a hard race, some great people worked on the campaign, I can’t thank them enough. The public spoke, and we wish June Speakman the best. We always want whoever is in a leadership role, representing us, to do well, because we all do well if she does well. But at the end of the day, I have a big beautiful family to go home to, and do all of my honey-do list items."
