Special tournament attracts athletes to Bristol

Posted

Hundreds of Special Olympians enjoyed a day of soccer, competition and friendship on a beautiful, sunny day at the Bristol sports complex near Colt State Park on Sunday. Teams from throughout the region, headlined by Bristol County’s own Baysiders, competed in the annual Joseph Rodrigues Memorial Soccer Tournament, spread out on several fields at the sports complex by the water. Joseph Rodrigues was a lifelong Bristol resident who coached and volunteered with Special Olympics for more than 30 years. His daughter, Carol, played for the Baysiders, while her sister, Jeanne, welcome everyone during Opening Ceremonies. The Rodrigues family gives out a Sportsmanship Award every year, and this year it went to the Ocean State/Bayside YMCA team. Asked about the tournament this year, Jeanne Rodrigues said, “All the parents always come over and say wonderful things about the tournament, and they’re aways so appreciative. With the great weather and all the athletes, it was a great year.”

He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
