Thomas P. Hughes, age 74, of Bristol, passed away Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017, in Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Kathleen J. (McCauley) Hughes, to whom he had been happily married for 36 years.

Born in Providence, Tom was the son of the late Thomas H. and Evelyn M. (Jones) Hughes, and a graduate of Hope High School, class of 1961. He spent more than half of his life in Bristol.

Tom was an avid woodworker who also enjoyed tending to his garden and spending time with his neighborhood friends. He was a huge NASCAR fan, especially of Dale Earnhardt.

Tom was known by those closest to him as the “Mayor of Burton Street.” In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by a son, Tucker M. Hughes of Tenn.; two stepdaughters, Jennifer Ferolito of Bristol and Sara Walsh of Ariz.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Tom’s funeral service will be held on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at 6:15 p.m. in the WILBUR-ROMANO FUNERAL HOME, 615 Main St., Warren, RI 02885. Visitation prior from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. Relatives and friends invited. Burial is private.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
