Veronica Mary Dionne, 86, of Bristol

Veronica Mary (Lima) Dionne, 86, formerly of Cole Street and High Street, passed away on March 1, 2019, at Roger Williams Hospital, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Henry Joseph Dionne. 

Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Pacheco) Lima. She is survived by her children, Denise Dionne and her husband Richard DeLima of Rumford, Diedre McMillan and her husband William of Warren, Doreen Manchester and her husband Mark of Bristol, and Dorinda Bailey of Wrentham, Mass.; grandchildren, Richard DeLima, Jr, Melinda Groff, Dionne Manchester, Edward Groff, John Dionne Sr., Jennifer Kugler, William K. McMillan IV, Mariel Manchester and Zackery Bailey; and great-grandchildren, Cole Kugler, Robert Groff, Alexandra Groff, Dylan Manchester, John Dionne, Jr., Lyla Dionne, Addison McMillan, Jose Garcia and Jason Dionne. She was preceded in death by her brother, the late George C. Lima.

Mrs. Dionne was a graduate of Colt Memorial High School, Class of 1952, and employed as a floor supervisor for Carol Cable for 25 years before retiring. She volunteered as a foster grandmother for the Bristol Warren School Department and was a former member of the Holy Rosary Sodality at St. Elizabeth’s Church.

She was also a former member of the American Legion Kearney Post #6, formerly on Franklin Street, serving as past president of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and was involved in “Girls State.” Veronica was a member and former secretary at the Bristol Senior Center and a member of the Portsmouth Senior Center Choir.

Mrs. Dionne enjoyed watching the Fourth of July parade with family and sitting on her porch on High Street chatting with anyone who walked by. She enjoyed the beach, clamboils, socializing with friends and hosting her family for Christmas. 

Her funeral services were held March 6 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Marinaldo Batista at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Fran Dutelle and Dionne Manchester. The Prayer of the Faithful was read by Brenda McMillan, and the offertory gifts were presented by Addison McMillan, John Dianne Jr., Lyla Dionne and Alexandra Groff. The soloist was Mariel Manchester. Serving as pallbearers were Ed Groff, Billy McMillan, Robert Groff, Ray Dutelle Jr., John Dionne, Ray Dutelle Sr. and John Lannan.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
