Monday, Sept. 11 At 9:21 a.m., an 18-wheeler carrying construction materials became stuck when turning into a driveway. It was eventually freed by a tow truck. At 1:02 p.m., a Highland Avenue resident reported receiving an IRS scam call. At 8:21 p.m., an Indian Road resident reported receiving an IRS scam call. Tuesday, Sept. 12 A motorist on West Main Road struck a deer at 6:28 a.m. and was able to drive his car from the scene. He was not injured, but the car sustained heavy front-end damage. TIVERTON — By a vote of 6-1 the Town Council at its meeting Monday night voted to hire five new police officers. Councilor Christine Ryan cast the lone vote against. Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
