Resignation effective today
Superintendent of Schools Edward P. Mara announced Tuesday that the Bristol Warren Regional School Committee, at its Monday meeting, accepted the resignation of Kathleen Borgia, a teacher at the Colt Andrews School, effective Oct. 30, 2009.
Ms. Borgia, a Warren resident and second-grade teacher at Colt Andrews Elementary School in Bristol, recently pleaded no contest to a drunk driving charge in Providence District Court last Friday. In September she was arrested for driving while intoxicated and refusing a sobriety test. Police pulled her over after witnessing her swerving her vehicle on Hope Street during her morning commute to school.
She didn't have much of a choice now did she?!? Amen the drunk is gone. How many more are teaching our children?
improveEP says:
1) UNIONS FIGHT AND SQUEEZE FOR MORE MONEY FOR THEIR MEMBERS (TEACHERS - POLICE - FIREMEN)
2) WHERE DOES THAT MONEY COME FROM?
3) IT COMES FROM THE ANNUAL TAXES PAID BY THE TAXPAYERS
4) IF YOU WANT HIGHER ANNUAL TAXES, THEN SUPPORT THE UNIONS AND THE POLITICAL CANDIDATES THEY SUPPORT AND WANT IN. YOU WILL THEN GET HIGHER TAXES.
5) IT'S JUST THAT SIMPLE !
Good riddance. But I'd rather she were fired for cause (under the influence on the job) to save the taxpayers unemployment and pension expense.
WELL YOU PEOPLE GOT YOUR WISH, AND SHE RESIGNED, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO SEE PEOPLE GET ON THOSE STATE WORKERS THAT WERE PROFILED LAST NIGHT ON CHANL 12, THOSE 4 HAVE BEEN RIPPING OFF THE TAXPAYERS OF RI, AND HOW MANY MORE ARE THERE. SCREW THE UNIONS AND THOSE 4 SHOULD BE FIRED AND MADE TO PAY BACK THE TAXPAYERS FOR THERE CRIMINAL ACT OF STEALING.
if i looked like that, i would drink all the time too.

I totally agree with you on that justice was not served to the taxpayer thats for sure. But at least shes gone, hopefully her teaching certificate will be permently revoked so another place doesn't have to put up with her.

The perfect is the enemy of the good...or at least adequate. Hopefully, she is where she should be...sitting outside some dive bar early in the morning...
If she wants to start respecting herself, I'll respect her too. Until then......
Craigisass;Voltaire? Really? Do you really believe that even one percent of the durfers (sic) here,, even recognize Voltaire?.......bah
A totally mis--applied quote, anyway.
"If the desire for an unattainable perfection stops someone from choosing good possibilities, they let the best be the enemy of the good."
Since we have to translate for Dan, that means in this case we will be happy about the outcome, although we may have preferred to see punishment even worse!
Of course, Dan, by your words we know you are a firm believer in Voltaires views on tolerance, right?
"What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly — that is the first law of nature."
I find it sad that all of those who have commented seem to have no place in your heart for a little kindness and forgiveness. This woman did not kill anyone and I'm sure she's going through a hell of her own. Do you really have to pile on? Are you all so perfect that your time will never come? For now, why not just leave her alone.
patinescondido: I'm not perfect, but i'm also not driving to work hammard at 8 am in the morning to teach 2nd graders. She had her second chance and blew it.
Are you serious patinescondido? Like really serious? She's had MANY brushes with the law. Been arrested numerous times on domestic assault and voilating restraining orders. How many times is the public supposed to have a place in their heart for kindness and forgiveness? She was getting paid 75k a year to TEACH children not arrive to school drunk! IF she had personal problems she should have taken the opportunity to use her premium benefits and got the help she needed! She blew it again and again and in my view and opinion she has received what was coming to her because of HER actions.
I still don't think that is any reason to attack the woman again and again. Do you really think she is going around having a happy life? Do you really think she needs you to tell her she is a bad person? Life is a lot harder for some people, for all kinds of reasons, and they don't always make rational decisions. Obviously the rest of you know her whole story and believe everything is her own fault. Don't know what that accomplishes, glad to know the rest of your have perfect lives.
patinescondido: I'm not perfect, my life is not perfect, I'll say this again. I'm not driving to work hammard at 8 am in the morning to teach 2nd graders. She had her second chance and blew it.
Not perfect "patinescondido" but most of us would have been in jail a long time ago for all the crap she has done over the years and its a lot. And though some women may not like it had this been a man with the same charges that "justmyopinion2" said he would have been in jail a long time ago also.
And she is a bad person some people just are and she is one of them. can she help herself yes, has she no, you dont act like she does because some strange force makes her. She refuses to take responsibilty for her actions period. Let her cry in her own misery she made it herself.
She chose to do what she did she is an adult and has for some time decided on her own to be the person she is. That is a reckless person who cares for no-one even herself. I assure you that you would not be singing the same tune if a child was harmed by her which was pure luck on the childrens part, and pure luck on the pubic's part she never killed anyone driving drunk at 8am rushing to school of all places, Or killed the people she assaulted.
I have never heard anyone here say they were perfect only fed up with her having the breaks she has recieved, and people behind her who's only obvious goal was to get her out of trouble without any kind of justice period. In any other average job she would have been fired a long time ago. It is long over due for Moral clauses to be put into these contracts to stop people like her.
You work for most companies and get one chance to clean up for alcohol or drug abuse as long as you volontarily do it before being caught, that by the way is the standard for federal employees, one chance before testing positive on a drug test. if you do your fired period.
And many businesses apply this standard and though the ACLU has fought it many times they have lost for good reason safety of employees and the people they serve is paramount in any business and the company has the right to protect itself. This should apply to every State employee but not her no she has a Union who cared more about saving her job then the children and public.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. She deserves to be in jailed and should thank her lucky star that people like you want to give her chance after chance after chance until she does create a tragedy for a family. well not me or most of the poster you so much want to feel sorry for her.
I feel sorry you dont get it she did wrong and must take responsibilty for her actions finally after years of gaming the system by her Union and people like you who allow it.

Being drunk on the way TO school???!!! After school I might understand, but TO school??? I'm surprised that it took so long for the town of Bristol, and the people that run it, to show any size of gonads and get rid of the teacher. Then again, nothing will become of it anyway othen that the teacher not teaching anymore in Bristol. What's going to keep her from going to another town, or state, to teach? Her teaching credentials should also be taken away from her.
blackstallion where have you been? The school commitee fired her for being drunk and then the union lawyer got her reinstated by way of an arbitrator who was seriously biased. That was old news 2 months ago.

GET RID OF REP. JACK "THE HACK" SAVAGE THE TEACHERS UNION SUPPORTER
She should never have been let back in the class room, after her DUI.
Let's not forget, your child could have been walking to school, and been hit by her and killed.
I guess that is what it would have taken, for the state to not jump in make the school give her her job back.
Wake up RI. it could have been your child at risk.
I'm glad she is gone. To bad she wasn't fired.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- In a rare move, state Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist has revoked the teaching certification of a Bristol-Warren teacher who pleaded no contest to driving drunk to school one morning, ensuring that the teacher can never again work in Rhode Island public schools.
Kathleen A. Borgia, 43, of Warren, was charged with drunken driving at 9 a.m. on Sept. 28 a block away from Colt Andrews Elementary School, where she taught second grade.
Supt. Edward Mara said he suspended her the next day, and she was placed on a paid leave until she resigned Oct. 30.
On Oct. 9, Borgia pleaded no contest to the charge and had her license suspended for six months.
The state has revoked just 12 certifications -- including Borgia's -- since 2001, according to a state Education Department spokesman.
Well I guess now the lawsuits will start, another 2 years of embarassment to follow i'm sure.
