Boys down Davies while girls wallop Wizards
TIVERTON — The Tiverton High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams lived up to their No. 1 rankings when they posted Division-Three, quarterfinal-round victories in a home playoff doubleheader Friday night.
The girls’ team, stymied for two-thirds of the game, broke through for five goals in the final 27 minutes, three by Sam William, en route to a 6-0 victory over West Warwick.
“They stayed with us for the whole first half,” said Tiverton coach Chris Messenger. “It was touch and go. Once we switched things up and put Sam up front, things turned around.”
Tiverton advances to play at North Smithfield Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m., on the Northmen’s artificial-surface field .
The boys’ squad didn’t score until midway through the first half but by then had taken command in an eventual 4-1 triumph over Davies Vocational.
“We needed to come out strong. I think we took control in the first 20, 25 minutes,” said Tiverton coach Tom Murray. “We scored a couple goals. It was a good game for us overall.”
The Tigers also will travel to North Smithfield to play Exeter-West Greenwich, a shootout winner over St. Raphael’s in its quarterfinal match, Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. Exeter is the lone team to hang a loss on the 11-1-3 Tigers this season.
Girls’ game
Rachel Lynch might not have known it at the time but she scored the game-winning goal with 3:11 left in the opening half with an assist to Tori Pierce. It was the lone score of the opening 40 minutes of physical play.
Sam William was knocked to the ground, shaken up and had to be removed from the game at one point. But things changed for the better in the second half when she switched positions with striker Tori Fryzel.
“They kind of took Sam out of the game a little bit when she got hurt,” Messenger said. “When she’s not controlling the middle, it doesn’t give us a very good advantage at all. When we move her up, she doesn’t have any stress on her and no people hacking at her.”
Nine minutes into the second half Lauren Hill nearly doubled the Tiverton lead when she tried to jam the ball in the left corner but was thwarted by a West Warwick defender. But a little over four minutes later Tiverton did manage to score.
Pierce sent a gorgeous through ball down the right side and Sam William ran onto it. She sped down the wing and from a sharp angle on the right, drilled a shot inside the far post. The goal demoralized the Wizards and perked up the Tigers.
That also began a streak of everything Sam William touched turned into goal. Four minutes later she banged home a shot from right in front after teammate Jenna Pare’s shot was turned aside.
William didn’t score the next goal but she had an assist. Erin Rodrigues started the play in motion from near midfield with a feed to William. She in turn moved the ball to Megan Raposa and the senior striker didn’t miss to give the Tigers their third goal in 10 minutes and a 4-0 lead.
“Sam likes the midfield and she does very, very well,” said Messenger. “But she can score goals. When we played Burrillville we switched her and Tori and within two minutes she had a goal.”
William added her third score off a header on a corner kick by Amanda McDermott with eight minutes left in the match. Hill closed the scoring by gathering a Tiverton shot which struck the crossbar and putting the ball in the net with under two minutes to play.
Boys’ game
Senior Ryan Soares turned into ‘Mr. October’ in the match against Davies. Now the Tigers are hoping he can continue his stellar play and morph into ‘Mr. November.’
Soares first assisted on Geoff Sampaio’s goal, then again on Jared Ramunno’s score, before finally putting the ball in the net himself to help guide the Tigers to their quarterfinal win.
“He was a big part in the first two goals and he scored a goal,” Murray said. “Ryan actually played the game of his life if you ask me.”
Andrew Kinnane didn’t need any help from Soares to nearly score the opening goal of the game. Kinnane brought the ball along the goal line to the left of the net where he tried to sneak the ball inside the left post. The ball hit diving Davies keeper Santiago Monsalve, bounced off the base of the post and out off bounds.
The Tigers couldn’t capitalize on the ensuing corner kick and actually almost fell behind. David Gallego intercepted a clearing pass and rocketed a shot high toward the goal. But Tiverton keeper Mike Perella leaped and one-handed the ball over the woodwork.
Tiverton’s Ryan Moniz nearly notched the first goal in the 18th minute but Monsalve dove and fended off the liner. Two minutes later Monsalve couldn’t control Sampaio’s shot from in close as the ball slipped through his hands, went off his chest and into the goal for a 1-0 Tiverton lead.
The Tigers continued to press and Soares snuck behind the defense chasing a long pass. He collected the ball as a Davies defender and Monsalve each tried to slide tackle it away from him. But Soares stayed on his feet, pushed the ball deeper into the zone and passed to Ramunno in front for an open-net goal with 5:32 left in the first half.
The Tigers were all over Davies in the second half as the visitors began to squabble with each other. Soares became entangled with Monsalve and two defenders right in the goal mouth and all of them fell to the ground. Soares was the was the first one to stand and he banged the ball into the goal for a 3-0 lead a little over five minutes into the second half.
“I think we outworked them. They didn’t have many subs and I think they got fatigued at the end,” said Murray. “We took control.”
Ken Meliza-Farias took advantage of a Monsalve bobble to put home Tiverton’s final goal with 13 minutes remaining. Gallego scored for Davies with under two minutes to play off a Tiverton miscue.
