 Manuel Fontes, 79, of Westport died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was the husband of Lorraine R. (Pelletier) Fontes.

 Born in New Bedford,a son of the late Manuel and Mary (White) Fontes, he had lived in Westport for the past 33 years. 

A veteran of the Korean War, he served his country in the United States Navy. Prior to retirement, he was a teacher in the Fairhaven School System and was the owner/operator of Blue Anchor Gift Shop in Westport.

Mr. Fontes was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. An avid reader, he also enjoyed gardening and woodcarving and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.

Including his wife, survivors include two sons, Stephen M. Fontes and his wife Linda of North Carolina, and David E. Fontes and his wife Stacey of Massachuetts; four daughters, Christine V. Peters and her husband Gary of Georgia, Catherine A. LaCross and her husband Jonathan of New York, Cynthia M. Baillargeon and her husband Leonard of Massachusetts and Carolyn M. Nadeau of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, a great grandson, and several nieces and nephews.
