She and husband were married for 72 years

Emily (Proto) Mascena, age 91, of Bristol and most recently of Atria Bay Spring, Barrington, died peacefully at Rhode Island Hospital on Monday, Nov. 2.

She was the loving wife of Stephen L. Mascena, her husband of 72 years. Born in Bristol on Oct. 24, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Raffaele and Annie (Sansone) Proto. Emily worked for Raytheon Company in Portsmouth until she retired in 1981.

She was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. She enjoyed spending time with family and dancing with her husband. She especially enjoyed the annual Bristol Fourth of July celebration when her extended family would gather for a reunion at her home.

Survivors in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Nancy Josephs and her husband, John, of Barrington; two sons, Anthony J. Mascena and his wife, Jill (Danch), of Cherry Hill, N.J., Stephen W. Mascena and his wife, Marci,a (Bernier) of Warwick; seven grandchildren, John Paul Josephs, Susan (Josephs) Agresta, Amy Mascena, Megan (Mascena) Gaspar, Scott Mascena, Todd Mascena and Bethany (Mascena) Tracy and their spouses; 13 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Lindsay and Lauren Josephs, Matthew and Michael Agresta, John, Joseph, Cecelia, Elliott and William Mascena, Olivia and Annabelle Tracy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Fanny Giordano and Josephine Formisano, and three brothers, Michael, Guy and Ralph Proto. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, will be Friday, Nov. 6, at 9:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.

Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
