Ruby Arlene Spooner of 199 Narragansett Blvd, Portsmouth, died peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at St. Anne's Hospital, Fall River in the company of her only child Leonard. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Leonard Gurney Spooner.

Born in Dorchester, Mass., on January 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Saidee (Wright) Killam. She lived in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and California before moving to Portsmouth to live with her twin sister Ruth.

With her caring nature, it was no surprise she chose nursing as a career. She had a genuine love and concern for others and she touched the lives of so many during her lifetime. Ruby loved taking photographs and was never without her camera. She also was a great sports fan, loving golf, baseball and hockey in particular.

She is survived by her son Leonard Spooner and his wife Sandy of Chapel Hill, N.C.; her twin sister Ruth Cottrell of Portsmouth; a granddaughter, Nicole Spooner of Raleigh, N.C.; a grandson, Michael Spooner of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a brother, Robert Killam of Marshfield, Mo. She is also survived by her nephew Dave, her nieces Donna, Lorrie, Jan and Jennifer and many great nieces and great nephews.

A private celebration of her life will be held and she will be buried with her husband in the family plot in Tiverton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Robert Potter League For Animals, PO Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.
