SEEKONK - Veterans’ Day is just around the corner and while there may not have been one central ceremony or event in the past several years, new town veterans’ agent Seth Bai is changing all that in 2009.

On Saturday, Nov. 14, American Legion Post 311 (located on Fall River Avenue) will host a ceremony honoring veterans as part of a collaboration between the group and the town’s veterans’ services office. Mr. Bai said the goal is to have a solid event this year and watch it grow over time.

“Basically not much has been done in the last six or seven years for Veterans’ Day in this town and seeing how I was just recently appointed I saw this as a opportunity to step up to the plate,” Mr. Bai said. “Even a bunt at this point is better than nothing in the last six years.”

Along with a variety of food, the ceremony will include prizes, a pledge of allegiance and a blessing. Additionally, the event will include an honored guest, Seekonk resident Al George. Mr. George was awarded The Bronze Star was his service in World War II and has a display case at Town Hall with a flag dedicated to him from 2001.

At his house, however, Mr. Bai said the colors of the nation’s flag are getting a little faded.

“That’s kind of the focal point of the ceremony,” Mr. Bai said. “To re-dedicate another flag to him.”

Donations of $15 are being accept to fund the event, including the cost of food and raffle prizes. All proceeds will be given to “Father Bill’s Place,” a transitional home for veterans and other homeless individuals.

When he started planning the ceremony, Mr. Bai said he was trying to hit a “home run.” He requested a helicopter fly over and while the Federal Aviation Administration gave it the green light, no Rhode Island and Massachusetts military units were able to accommodate the request.

Additionally, Mr. Bai said he had tried to have a motorcycle ride coordinate with the event, but it was too late in the season. Still, the goal is to make the event bigger every year.

“If this is something I can keep going for the next 6, 7, 8, 9 years it can only get better and bring out more esprit de corps in the community,” Mr. Bai said.

To RSVP for the event, contact Mr. Bai’s office at 508/336-2940. Also, Mr. Bai is still looking for candidates to sing the national anthem. Interested parties and those looking for more information should contact the same number.

The ceremony will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Veterans’ Day is on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
