TIVERTON — The Barrington High School girls’ volleyball team stunned previously unbeaten and top-seeded Tiverton 3-2 Thursday night in a Division Two quarterfinal-round playoff match.

Barrington, the fifth seed from two-South which twice lost to the Tigers during the regular season, won the first two games 25-23 and 25-20, dropped the next two, 25-23 and 25-19, then captured the match-deciding, fifth game 15-12.

“This team took care of us pretty easily during the regular season,” said Barrington coach Ron Enos. “But we’re a different team right now. I really love the kids. I love the way they play. I’m so happy for them.”

The win was the seventh straight for Barrington and pushed them deeper into the playoffs. The upstart Eagles will play a semifinal match against Cranston West or Westerly this Monday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m., at the University of Rhode Island’s Keaney Gymnasium.

“We won the last five regular-season games. We won a tight game against Bay View. We won a tight game against North Smithfield,” said Enos. “We’re just playing our best volleyball right now. You hope that happens and it’s happened for us this year.”

Alyssa Madwed opened the fifth game with her ninth kill of the match. Then the Tigers botched a pass and Barrington server Alex D’Angelo rocked an ace before serving the ball into the net. Madwed came through with another kill and the teams traded points until the score reached 7-5 Barrington.

A bad serve, Tiverton’s third of five in the final game, and a long hit enabled the Eagles to post a 9-5 lead. But Tiverton scored four of the next six points to hack the advantage to 11-9. Enos called a timeout and when play resumed the Tiverton server hit the ball into the net.

“We missed five serves the last game,” Tiverton coach Brian Goldberg said. “We gave them the game.”

Barrington’s Abbey West then tipped the ball to the floor on the Tiverton side of the net to up the lead to 13-9. Tiverton opted for a timeout and when play resumed Tiverton’s Shayna Carmichael whacked her eleventh kill to make it 13-10 Barrington.

Madwed responded with another kill to get the Eagles to match point. Again, Tiverton called a timeout. Barrington was called for touching the net and Tiverton’s Haile Verville served up an ace to make it 14-12 Eagles.

Verville got the next ball over the net and the teams knocked it around. Tiverton set up for a kill try but the hit was long and the Eagles got the point and the match.

“We didn’t give up huge runs. We were going back and forth for a while even the games we lost,” Enos said. “I think that was really important going into the fifth game. We knew we were able to stay with them if we could get a couple of runs like we did in that fifth game.”

Jess Boukarim and Chelsea D’Angelo played key roles when Barrington won the first two games. Boukarim was perfect on 14 serves, had five aces, all in the second game, four kills and five blocks. D’Angelo was 9-for-11 serving with four aces, two kills and three digs.

The Tigers rallied the next two games to keep the match alive. Down 19-17 in the third game, Carmichael and Jill Cayer each had a kill and Carmichael served up an ace to give the Tigers a 20-19 edge, their first lead of the game. Barrington came back to tie it at 20, and again at 21, before the Tigers scored two straight to gain a 23-21 edge.

Tiverton’s Taylor Violet rocketed a serve that caused Chelsea D’Angelo to go to the floor. She got her hand under the ball and sent it back over the net where it landed in the middle of a group of Tiverton players who couldn’t reach it.

Then Cayer came up with a big kill to give Tiverton a 24-22 edge. The Tigers were called for carrying the ball before Carmichael rose above the net and two-handed a kill to end the game.

Tiverton was down by as many as six points the fourth game before outscoring Barrington 17-5 to pull out the win and force a deciding game. The last game went to the Eagles.

“I know this team. They refuse to quit,” Enos said. “They don’t worry about the scoreboard. They play one point, one ball at a time.”
