Westport is third seed, Seekonk 10th in D-Three event
SEEKONK — The Seekonk High School boys’ soccer team earned the 10th seed in the Division Three South Sectional Tournament and heads to seventh-seeded Hanover for an opening round game in the main draw of the event Sunday afternoon, Nov. 8, at 1 o’clock.
The Warriors finished the regular season with an 11-5-2 record and a .667 win percentage. Hanover completed its regular slate with a 12-2-4 mark and .778 win percentage. Sunday's game takes place at the Hanover Middle School field, located about an hour's drive from town.
The Indians were the winners of their sixth consecutive Patriot League-Fisher Division title this fall and have made the sectional semis twice before under head coach Jim Sylvia. Hanover was paced in scoring by Jon Sptiz with a team-best 12 points and eight assists. Dylan Griffin led the Indians with eight goals scored.
"It will be a real test. It's the team we lost to five years ago in the finals. They're a solid defensive team. They only gave up seven goals. Didn't score a lot, so they seem a lot like us," said SHS head coach Jeff Creamer, who's Warriors were led by the 13 goals of Aris Santiago.
"I've got think that if we come and play our game, we can play with anybody," Creamer added.
Significant to the Warriors' hopes is the loss to the in-school suspension of senior and starting keeper Zach Caron. Caron will likely be lost for at least Seekonk's first two playoff games. Cory Zimmerman, who saw action in four games this fall, gets the call between the woodwork for the locals.
"Hopefully, our defense can step up and help Cory out," said Creamer. "The rest of our team has to show up and play really hard."
Harwich is the second seed after going 17-1-2. The Seekonk-Hanover winner advances to the quarterfinal round opposite the team that advances out of the Harwich portion of the bracket.
Nearby Westport is the third seed as the Wildcats, winners of the Mayflower League-Large Division, went 13-2-2 during its regular season. Chatham, at 14-3-1, is the fourth seed.
The winner of the Rockland-Hull, seeds 15 and 18 respectively, preliminary round match plays in Harwich Monday afternoon. A date, site and time for the quarter in the section of the draw is to be determined.
Westport awaits the winner of the preliminary match between 14th-seeded Cohasset and 19th-seeded Bristol-Plymouth. The Wildcats are also home for their first round outing Monday, Nov. 9, at 2:30 p.m. Sixth-seeded West Bridgewater and 11th-seeded Bourne complete this half of the bracket.
Cardinal Spellman is the overall No. 1 seed in the 21-team field. Spellman went unbeaten during the regular season in 20 contests to win the Central Catholic League. Seekonk lost to the Cardinals in the first round of last year's tournament, 2-1.
