WARREN — A Metacom Avenue convenience store owner was held up at gun point and robbed after a man wearing a white hooded sweatshirt entered the store, put a gun to the owner’s face and demanded money Thursday morning.

“He just said, ‘give me your money.’” said Warren Convenience Store owner Nalin Patel. “He got a real gun, pointed it at me. I opened the cash register and gave it to him.”

After the man took the money at approximately 9:30 a.m., Mr. Patel went to the outside parking lot located at 630 Metacom Ave. to see if he could find what direction the suspect fled and called the police.

“The guy had already left,” he said.

According to Lt. Joseph Loiselle, a witness saw the suspect run north towards a Third Street apartment complex parking lot, get in a black SUV with tinted windows, and then drive away on Metacom Avenue. He was wearing sunglasses, a white hoodie, and sneakers.

Mr. Patel said he was very scared during the robbery. During his ten years of ownership, he has never experienced a crime of this nature.

“I don’t have any arguments with customers,” he said. “I can’t get to sleep. It’s still on my mind.”

He said he would be more careful by watching every person who enters the store.

Police were unable to apprehend the man who robbed the store. But detectives are conducting an investigation and following up on leads. If someone has any information regarding the crime, police urge them to call the Warren Police Department at 245-1311.

They say fishing in the waters of Alaska is the deadliest job but I think being a cashier at a QuickyMart is!

Have the police released a better description of this man? The video doesn't reveal height, distinct facial features, age range, etc. I'm sure this extra information would help the community.

A dye pack is a device used by banks to foil bank robbers non-violently.

Banks put dye packs in money given up during robberies. The dye pack is an incendiary device that explodes in a shower of colored ink (usually Disperse Red 9), and sometimes tear gas, intended to permanently stain and destroy the stolen money and mark the robber's hands with a bright red color. Before the pack is used, it is stored next to a magnetic plate that keeps the pack dormant. When it is removed from the magnetic plate to be put into a money bag, it becomes armed. Within the pack is a small radio receiver that receives a signal sent by a transmitter at the door. This activates a timer that causes the pack to explode some short time later, such as when the criminal is in his/her getaway car.

The design of a modern dye pack is available via US patent #5196828[1].
