East Providence captures girls' indoor track division meet championship

Townies top Prout for D-II Dwyer crown

Posted

PROVIDENCE — Second to Prout during the dual meet regular season, the East Providence High School girls’ indoor track and field team captured the Division II-Dwyer championship meet title Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Providence Career and Tech Academy Field House by besting the same Crusaders by 14 points.

The Townies, who went 8-1 in duals, compiled 73 points in the winning the championship followed by Prout in second with 59. Wheeler was third with 57. The Crusaders won the Dwyer duals title with a 9-0 record, including a 70.5-38.5 over E.P.

“The girls worked hard all season to earn the division title. We battled through numerous injuries and only became full strength this week,” EPHS head coach Mike Almeida said.

Results

East Providence scored in 11 of the 14 events, including victories by Haley Teodoro in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches and its 4x800 meter relay team of Kristy Long, Taylor Heck, Krystal Pizzi and Lily Palumbo, who clocked a time of 10 minutes, 50.2 seconds. That mark was 28 seconds better than their previous season best.

On the track, Palumbo ran second (11:47) to Mt. Hope’s Meg O’Brien (11:39) in the 3,000 meters and was also the runner-up (3:33.34) to Hope’s Leinni Valdez (3:28.02) in the 1,000. Heck ran sixth in the 1,000 with a 3:43.86. Valdez also won the 1,500 (4:57.78) where Long ran fifth in 5:30.36. Long added a second-place run (1:49.2) to Hope’s Lisbeth Valdez (1:45.36) in the 600. Hasna Badji, likewise, was the runner-up (10.23 seconds) in the 55 meter hurdles behind to Michaela Goglia of Mt. Hope (9.52).

Also, the Townies placed third in the two other relay events, as Hailey Placido, Jade Braxton, Kylie Bahry and Badji ran a combined 1:56.67 in the 4x2 while Placido, Braxton, Badji and Alyssa DeOliveira clocked a 4:49.58 in the 4x4.

Other East Providence field results had Dorian Woods placing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 25’11.5,” Bahry (4’4”) and Riley Farnsworth (4’2”) placing fifth and sixth, respectively, behind Teodoro in the high jump and Placido placing sixth (14’6.5”) in the long jump.

“We are a very young team and will lose no one next season because we have no seniors. Our goal moving forward will be to keep working hard and qualify as many girls for the state meet,” Almeida added. “I’m glad the girls were able to achieve success and realize their potential to be great and eventually compete for a state title.

Boys’ results

The EPHS boys’ indoor track and field also contested its Metropolitan Division championship meet January 28 at the PCTA, a depleted Townies’ group scoring just five points to place last among the eight sides.

LaSalle won the title with 109 points followed by Central with 109 and Classical with 96. The Rams also won the dual meet season, going 8-0. The Townies placed fifth with a 4-4 mark.

East Providence scored all its points Saturday in the three relay races. The team of Colby Amaral, Aaron Parsons, Aidan Schwab and Emmanuel Santiago ran sixth in the 4x200 with a 1:50.97. In the 4x400, Parsons, Armani Ortega, Evan Berger and Amaral clocked a 4:19.62 to place fifth. And in the 4x800, Berger, Troy DeAndrade, Amaral and Zach Medeiros also finished fifth in 10:51.16.

The Townies were without the brother duo of David and Clinton Ogunronbi, both considered among the top jumpers in the division and the state. The Ogunrunbis are also members of the EPHS boys’ basketball team, which had a physically and emotionally draining win over previously unbeaten St. Raphael the previous evening. Minus the brothers, E.P. was unable to score in at least “two or three other events,” according to head coach Bob Lyons.
