An East Providence resident driving a white pickup truck left a trail of destruction in Barrington on Saturday night, said police.
According to police reports, the truck Jared Rhodes was driving collided with another vehicle near the intersection of County Road and Massasoit Avenue at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14.
The victim, surprised that the white truck did not stop after hitting her car, followed Mr. Rhodes, but eventually lost sight of him on Lincoln Avenue. The victim called police to report the hit and run.
About two minutes later, a resident on Sullivan Terrace called police to report a hit and run of a different type. The resident said he was watching television with his family when they heard a loud noise outside the home. They rushed outside and saw a white pickup truck leaving the area; they also saw that the truck had destroyed the family's antique mailbox stand.
According to the report, the resident's son started running after the truck to alert the driver to the accident, but was unable to catch up to the vehicle.
Police said Mr. Rhodes's vehicle had also been chased through St. Andrew's School property.
Police used the license plate information to track down the reported driver of the vehicle and, having prior knowledge of the individual, stopped by a local club to see if he had been there that evening. People at the club's bar reportedly confirmed that Mr. Rhodes had been there earlier.
Police then went to Mr. Rhodes's home in East Providence. Officers spotted the suspect's vehicle parked outside the home at 89 Hazard Ave., and knocked on the door. No one answered.
At 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, Mr. Rhodes stopped into the Barrington Police Station and turned himself in. Police charged Mr. Rhodes with one count of leaving the scene of an accident — damage to an attended vehicle.
