PAWTUCKET — Three of the four players to reach the semifinals of the 113th Rhode Island Golf Association State Amateur Championship being played this week at Ledgemont Country Club hailed from the East Bay area, including the two finalists.

Portsmouth's Jake Bauer and Barrington's Matt Broome were slated to square off for the title Friday morning, July 13 ,in a 36-hole match after winning their quarterfinal and semi outings the previous day.

Bauer, who defeated Austin Cilley of Winnapaug in Westerly and Patrick Welch of Agawam Hunt in East Providence in his early round contests, bettered Chris Delucia of Connecticut National in the quarterfinals by a narrow 1-up score.

In the semis, Bauer, a 2014 Portsmouth High grad playing out of Montaup in his hometown, raced to an early edge against Eric Marcetti, who vies out of Metacomet in East Providence, before closing the latter out by a decisive 7-and-6 score.

Bauer fired a sizzling 5-under par 31 on the outward nine en route to building a commanding 5-up lead, then closed out the victory with his sixth birdie of the day on the par 3, 186-yard 12th hole.

Broome, a member of Barrington High state championship teams in the early 2000s, defeated Chris Roloff of Wannamoisett in East Providence and Jason Barrow of Valley in West Warwick to begin match play. He then beat reigning state am champ and Wannamoisett's Bill Forcier, 4-and-3, in the quarterfinals.

In the semis, Broome, a member of his hometown Rhode Island C.C., met up with 2005 state am winner Tom McCormick, playing out of Kirkbrae in Lincoln. Broome shot a 4-under 32 on his opening nine to build a 3-up lead at the turn.

McCormick, however, responded early on the back nine with a pair of birdies, on the par 5 11th and par 3 12th holes, to trim his deficit to just one. But McCormick just as quickly gave one back to Broome after he made bogey on the 400-yard, par 4 13th while the latter made a four to return his edge to a pair.

Broome, likewise, had an answer in his own bag, winning the next two holes outright to claim his spot in the finale with a 4-and-3 victory. Broome made a birdie on the par 4, 396-yard 14th hole to McCormick’s bogey, then made a birdie two on the par 3, 187-yard 15th to close out the match as his opponent made another bogey.
