Local lacrosse teams wrap up successful spring season

Posted

The East Bay Bristol County Lacrosse Association is celebrating another successful season.

The boys 5/6 Division 2 Blue team won the Rhode Island Youth Lacrosse League State Championship and many teams participated in playoffs, semifinal games and finals.

Boys’ and girls’ grade 1 and 2

The organization fields combined age group teams for first and second grade boys teams and combined age group teams for first and second grade girls teams. The girls’ group fielded three teams and played league games around Rhode Island. The boys’ group had two teams that played a competitive house league schedule with great local talent. The teams participated in the Warwick End-of-Season Jamboree to finish out the season.

Girls’ grade 3 and 4

The third and fourth grade girls were highly competitive in their division with the Gold team making it to the championship game. They beat Cumberland 6-5 in the semifinals to avenge a loss in the regular season. The championship game was against an evenly matched Burrillville team. From the start, it was back and forth with each team responding after each goal. They headed into overtime tied 5-5, and lost in sudden victory to Burrillville. The team had six new players who had never picked up a stick before. All 20 players were dedicated, loyal and fierce competitors.

Boys’ grade 3 and 4

The boys’ third and fourth grade Blue team finished with seven straight wins after starting 0-2 to make the playoffs tied for fourth place in the league. They lost a tough road game to Providence 6-4 in the first round but the boys showed their heart and toughness throughout a very physical game. The team made tremendous progress on their skills and understanding of the game, all while being great teammates and showing good sportsmanship. Standouts include first-time goalie Adam Godfrey, defensive standout Montgomery Gantz, and offensive standouts Jack Treat, Nick Spaight and Colin Hope, as well as new addition, Liam Blondin, who joined the team mid-season.

The boys’ third and fourth grade Gold team, known as the Warriors, started its season off hot by winning 7 games in a row until their first loss in a one goal game to a physical BYLax team. The following week, the Warriors rallied and tried to best a tough Providence team, but once again, lost by one goal. Making the playoffs, the Warriors faced SCYL in a nail bitter that went into overtime. This time, the Warriors got the upper hand and knocked SCYL out of the playoffs by one goal. In the final four, every single Warrior played a great game with a lot of heart. The goalie, Cole Wilson, was strong in net. The offense was led by midfielders Chase Squires and Lachlan Got. The defense was anchored by Teddy Alessandro. They controlled the ball and ran a great offense. The defense played tough and had great slides. The Warriors finished their season with 100 goals — the only 3/4 team to break 3 digits. They only let in 46 goals all season.

Girls’ grade 5 and 6

The girls’ fifth and sixth grade Division 2 team enjoyed success on multiple levels this spring. After completing the regular season with a winning record, the team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the playoffs. The final game was played under the lights on the main turf field at Bryant University and though the team lost a close, well-played game to Cumberland, the girls left the field with their heads held high knowing that they had played hard and played together.

The team’s shared love of the game and support for one another grew to become comfortable, familiar and almost expected. Collectively, they formed a wonderful team that exemplified all that is good about working toward a common goal with a shared purpose.

They've grown individually and as a team in large part due to their complete commitment to one another and focus on learning about the game. In the process they expected a lot from themselves and pushed one another to improve — forging the foundation for a strong bond and memories that are theirs forever.

Boys’ grade 5 and 6

The boys’ fifth and sixth Division 2 Blue team won the state championship by defeating Portsmouth in the final. The boys were a strong unit on the field and demonstrated their talent and growth by playing one of their best games of lacrosse to end the season.

The boys’ fifth and sixth Division 1 team played a strong season of lacrosse, losing to East Greenwich in the championship. The team was defined by their strong defense which was led by Henry Alessandro. The goaltender, Ryan Valentine, was a solid presence in net. When the team was performing, they were able to demolish other teams like their playoff win against Portsmouth, a 12-0 victory. The players have been challenged and have learned to focus on what matters to win games and support teammates. They end the season knowing that they can always strive to be better and do better.

Boys’ grade 7 and 8

The boys’ seventh and eighth grade Division 2 Gold team was the fifth seed in the playoffs. They lost 6-3 in the first round but finished the season 6-3. The boys’ seventh and eighth grade Division 2 Blue team was the third seed in the playoffs and advanced to the semifinals before dropping the game to a tough Portsmouth team.

The boys seventh and eighth grade Division 1 team had a successful season going 7-1 during the regular season and earning the number two seed going into the playoffs. The boys lost a heartbreaking 1 goal game in the state semifinal game but bounced back with a 4-0 record and championship in the PrimeTime Bulldog Brawl the following weekend. The kids all improved as players, and became the true definition of a team. The coaches couldn't have been more proud of their efforts all year and they will all be contributors to their high schools for the seasons ahead.

Girls’ grade 7 and 8

The girls’ seventh and eighth select team had a great season playing in the highly competitive New England Select Lacrosse League in Massachusetts. They competed against some of the top club teams in the region.

Additionally, EBBCLA ran a team through the Barrington Middle School for both the boys and the girls. The boys had 56 players participating this spring. They had a successful, fun season.
