EAST PROVIDENCE — Two bits of business-related notes of interest occurred in city over the last few days with the announcement Seven Stars Bakery had been sold while Papa Gino’s closed several of its restaurants, one of its two East Providence locations included.

With little to no notice given to either employees or customers, Papa Gino’s shuttered numerous restaurants over the weekend, including one locally in city on Highland Avenue/Route 6.

The popular pizzeria chain only last week boasted of having over 150 locations across New England, but just a few days later that total was down to 97, six of which remain open in Rhode Island. The other East Providence restaurant, on Newport Avenue in Rumford, was spared from the closings.

Seven Stars Bakery, the Providence-based operation with a satellite store situated in the Rumford Center at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue and North Broadway, made it known the sale of the business to the Barrington couple of Tracy and Bill Daugherty.

The transaction, by founders Lynn and Jim Williams, was made public late last week. It includes all of the Seven Stars stores.

The Daughertys may be familiar to some after their intended purchase of another business with city ties, Munroe Dairy, was announced late last year then called off this past summer. Munroe remains in the hands of the Armstrong family.
