Tengbeh earns second college hoops weekly honor
Rhode Island College freshman guard Deyshawn Tengbeh, of East Providence, was named the Little East Conference men’s basketball Rookie of the Week, January 28, for the second time this season after his performances in two recent Anchormen victories. Tengbeh averaged 14.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last week. He had 20 points and seven boards in a 70-54 win over Plymouth State on Jan. 23. Tengbeh compiled eight points and seven boards in a 66-56 win over Southern Maine on Jan. 26. For the season, Tengbeh has played in 20 games, starting all of them. He is averaging 14.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. The Anchormen entered the week 12-8 overall and 5-6 in the Little East. Tengbeh was also named the conference’s ROW for of the week for November 26, 2018.

Santos helps Knights upset nationally ranked Bulldogs
The Community College of Rhode Island men’s basketball team earned its most noteworthy win to date as the Knights defeated the NJCAA Division III No. 5 nationally ranked Bunker Hill Bulldogs Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, 76-70. The win improves CCRI’s season record to 18-3 overall, 15-2 in Region XXI play and upped its recent winning streak to eight in a row. The loss was the first for Bunker Hill in regional play and also snapped a 15-game run of victories for the visiting Bulldogs, who fell to 15-1 in the XXI and 16-2 overall.
East Providence product J.C. Santos, the Knights sophomore co-captain, totaled 18 points, eight assists, five rebounds and one steal in the win. Santos’ 148 total assist and seven assists per game sits him at fourth and ninth in the nation respectively.

McCarthy shines for BCC men’s hoops
City native Marcus McCarthy is among the local products having outstanding seasons on the area college basketball circuit. McCarthy, an East Providence High School graduate and former member of the Townies’ boys’ hoops team, is currently a key contributor to the Bristol Community College (Fall River, Mass.) men’s cagers.
The Bayhawks entered last week with a 16-1 overall record and riding a seven-game winning streak, including an 88-52 win on January 19 over visiting Springfield Tech Community College. BCC improved to 10-0 at home at the time of the victory.
McCarthy has played in all 17 games for the Bayhawks. He led all scorers in the win over STCC with 27 points. The sophomore guard added seven assists and seven rebounds. For the season, he’s averaging 17.4 points per contest, is shooting 61.4 percent from the field and 48 percent from the 3-point line. He also averaging 7.5 rebounds per night and 7.4 assists, the latter ranking him seventh in the country according to National Junior College Athletic Association Division III statistics. As a freshman, McCarthy averaged 6.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 9.6 ppg.
The Bayhawks entered last week eighth in the NJCAA D-III rankings and second in the Region XXI standings behind only the aforementioned Bunker Hill Community College, which handed BCC its lone loss to date, 79-74, in early December. The teams meet again in Fall River for the Bayhawks’ regular season finale, February 19.
