East Providence sets school calendar for 2018-19 term

Classes once again start pre-Labor Day

EAST PROVIDENCE — As has now been the case for the past few years, the upcoming 2018-19 school term in East Providence will begin the last full week of August before Labor Day.

The school committee, at its February 13 meeting, approved the calendar for next year submitted by Superintendent Kathryn Crowley.

Teachers, on Monday, Aug. 27, attend their yearly convocation. On Tuesday, Aug. 28, students in grades 1-5 report to school as do sixth and ninth graders, respectively, at the middle school and high school levels for orientation. The introductory seminar for sixth grade students at Martin and Riverside Middle Schools will be new in 2018-19. All students and district personnel then arrive for the formal first day of classes on Wednesday, Aug. 29.

In addition, the district will once again close on the day before Thanksgiving, this year on Wednesday, Nov. 21. The off-day was introduced to the calendar for the first time this current term.

The pre-Labor Day start of classes, a practice begun in time for the 2015-16 term, is now a part of the district’s contracts with its bargaining units. It will continue at least through the expiration of the current three-year agreements in October 2020.
