EAST PROVIDENCE — The 57th Northeast Amateur Invitational Championship is taking place this week at Wannamoisett Country Club, the renowned layout once again hosting some of the world's best players.
University of Southern California sophomore All-American Justin Suh took a three-shot lead over fellow Golden Stater Joshua McCarthy into the fourth and final round.
Suh shot 2-under 67 in the third round to finish at 12-under total. McCarthy, a sophomore at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif., matched the tourney-best score so far by carding a 63 in the third round to finish at 9-under.
Will Gordon, a Vanderbilt junior, was four off the pace after three round, shooting even par 69 to sit at 8-under and in a share of third place with University of Cincinnati junior Austin Squires. Squires shot 66 in Round 3. Cal-Berkeley junior Sebastian Crampton was alone in fifth after 54 holes, also carding a 66 in the third round to finish at 6-under.
Suh held the 36-hole lead at 10-under. The fourth-rated player internationally according to the World Amateur Golf Rankings followed up his opening round 6-under 63 with a nearly as impressive 65 in the second round.
Defending champion Collin Morikawa, also of Cal-Berkeley, was in a group of players still in the hunt at the midpoint of the tournament at 2-under, but struggled to a 72 in Round 3 and resided in a share of 29th place at 1-over for the tournament.
All five Rhode Islanders in the field — Brad Valois, Tyler Cooke, Patrick Welch, Billy Forcier and Bobby Leopold — missed the 36-hole cut. Fifty-five players made the weekend at 5-over or better. Leopold, playing over his home course at Wannamoisett, was the low local at 8-over.
