For the first time in 46 years since the Rhode Island Interscholastic League instituted “Super Bowl” championship games in 1972, the 90th annual Thanksgiving football contest between East Providence High School and LaSalle Academy played this fall marked the official end of the season for both the Townies and Rams.
Friday night, Nov. 23, after the contest was delayed a day due to below normal frigid temperatures, host LaSalle rallied to defeat East Providence, 21-18, at the Rams’ Cimini Field in Providence.
LaSalle scored the opening touchdown and converted the point to take the lead at end of one quarter. The score remained 7-0 to intermission. East Providence answered in the third quarter, scoring a pair of touchdowns, but failing on the points-after to settle for a 12-7 advantage. The Rams then tacked on two more TDs in the fourth quarter while the Townies added one, giving the hosts the victory.
Dion Hazard accounted for two of East Providence’s scores, one on a seven-yard run and the other a 70-yard interception return. Exondus Barnes scored the other TD for the Townies. The Rams also scored a defensive touchdown on a 70-yard fumble return by Steven Doss. Jordan Griffin ran for a two-yard score and Tyriq Lowe finished off a 25-yard throw and catch from Mike Grenier. A Dan Catanzaro point-after kick and a two-point conversion run by Michael Jordan accounted for LaSalle’s winning margin.
For the Townies, who lost to Central in the quarterfinal round of the Division I championship tournament, their season came to a close with a 5-6 overall record. LaSalle, which fell to Hendricken in the state championship game, improved to 7-3 overall. The Rams also extended their overall lead in the Thanksgiving Day series to 51-37-2.
