Legislators: Bond will help state deal with rising seas

Candidates asked 'What will you do to battle climate change?'

Question: With Rhode Island being very vulnerable to sea level rise, what specific proposals have you prepared to combat climate change?

RI Senate, District 32

• David Aucoin — "I grew up in New Bedford and years ago they invested in a system of sea walls and barriers to protect the shoreline. Powerful hurricanes had often caused devastation on the shoreline  A study of the most vulnerable places should be done to see which part of the RI shoreline is most vulnerable and what could be done to insure its preservation."

• Cindy Coyne — "I co-sponsored legislation to establish the ‘Global Warming Solutions Act’, and I am proud to have supported the ‘Green Economy Bond’ which is now on the ballot this November. This bond will, in part, help the State deal with flooding and rising sea levels. Please vote yes on Question 3!"

RI House, District 67

• Daryl Gould — "Sea rise is the proverbial 'unstoppable force.' Based upon how things go in RI, if the state tried to combat sea level rise we'd all be floating around on debris hearing about how much more money they need to do it right. Property owners can make their own choices about their response."

• Jason Knight — "Combating climate change will require an 'all of the above' strategy. We must be prepared to support our local communities with resources and training to anticipate and prevent problems before they arise. Further, we must ensure that we do everything we can to adapt our energy infrastructure to renewable energy."

RI House, District 66

• Liana Cassar — "Our communities will face increasingly severe weather events caused by climate change. Ideally, legislation would help communities respond to flooding and storm damage to roadways, make RI’s power grid resilient to storm impacts, support the insurance industry in responding to homeowners’ property damage claims and slow the state's contribution to CO2 emissions."

• Rhonda Holmes — "Although sea levels rising is a state issue, climate change is a global problem. To alter this locally, I propose free-market solutions that take initiative without hurting businesses with undue regulation. This includes incentivizing private-businesses to reduce CO2 and encourage municipalities to build their own programs rather than impose regulatory commitments."
